A new area I am looking at currently is review sites, there are a lot of these around and they can contribute both to traffic and backlinks.
Increasingly I am more interested in traffic that links.
http://www.siterapture.com is the first site I am using - it contains a list of review sites - which I am working through
Directory Journal - a good strong directory

I have been using directoryjournal for about a year now. It appears to be a strong directory and listing your site with them does appear to increase your credibility with Google. I list all my sites with them.
What I like about them is that you can deep link into internal pages of your website, and use your own selection of anchor text.
